Getting to VIERS

First you have to get to St. Thomas:

Flight destination is St. Thomas (STT).

St. Thomas: Upon arrival to the St. Thomas airport, proceed to the baggage claim area which is to the left after entering the building.  Once you claim your luggage, proceed to the taxi dispatcher to arrange for a ride to the ferry. There are always plenty of taxi vans from the VI Taxi Association at the airport. Depending on the time of ferry connections listed below, you will be catching either the Red Hook ferry or the downtown ferry (both of which will take you to Cruz Bay, St. John). The Red Hook ferry is recommended.

Note all rates quoted are per person, one way unless otherwise noted.

Prices are as of August 2004 and are subject to change. You should confirm the rate prior to getting into the taxi.

Taxi: Taxi to Red Hook is about $14.00 with luggage and tip. Travel time is about 35 minutes.

St. John: Once on St. John, it will take approximately 35 minutes to get from Cruz Bay to VIERS.

Taxi: Not all taxi drivers will make the long trip out to Lameshur Bay, and as a result not all charge the same fare.  We prefer to negotiate a rate in advance with one operator that includes delivering you to VIERS and pick up for departure.  That can be about $24.00 round trip with luggage and tip. We usually work with Hamilton Eugene and he can be reached at 340-776-6259. You should contact him a few days ahead of your arrival for an scheduled pickup at the ferry dock.

Rental Cars: Rental vehicles are available. To get to VIERS, you have to drive on an unpaved road which has a rather rough hill to go over and a four wheel drive vehicle is required to get in and out of the VIERS site.   Be sure to inform the rental company prior to renting a vehicle that you are going to VIERS or the Lameshur Bay area because not all companies allow their vehicles to go off the paved road.

Getting to VIERS: Take the Centerline Road (route 10) for 8 miles to Coral Bay.  Turn right on to Route 107 just as you settle onto the flat area of Coral Bay. There is a ball field on the water side of the intersection.  Follow Route 107 to the very end, about 5 miles of hilly paved road. At the end, the road becomes a rough dirt road, not much more than one lane wide.  Follow this for about 1 mile. It takes you up some steep switchbacks over a ridge and down a long steep incline to sea level, and turns right behind a mangrove area.  About a half mile on the flat section, the road divides and to the right is a roadsign welcoming you to VIERS.  The camp site is a short distance along this road.  Total distance from Cruz Bay is a little more than 14 miles!
