Getting to VIERS

First you have to get to St. Thomas:

Flight destination is St. Thomas (STT).

St. Thomas: Upon arrival to the St. Thomas airport, proceed to the baggage claim area which is to the left after entering the building.  Once you claim your luggage, proceed to the taxi dispatcher to arrange for a ride to the ferry. There are always plenty of taxi vans from the VI Taxi Association at the airport. Depending on the time of ferry connections listed below, you will be catching either the Red Hook ferry or the downtown ferry (both of which will take you to Cruz Bay, St. John). The Red Hook ferry is recommended.

Note all rates quoted are per person, one way unless otherwise noted.

Prices are as of September 2011 and are subject to change. You should confirm the rate prior to getting into the taxi.

Taxi: Taxi to Red Hook is about $18.00 with luggage and tip. Travel time is about 35 minutes.

Taxi to Downtown is about $10.00 with luggage and tip. Travel time is about 15 minutes.

Ferry: Red Hook: The Red Hook ferry to Cruz Bay, St. John leaves every hour on the hour from 6:00 am to Midnight.

Fare: $6.00 per person and each piece of luggage is $2.50; Travel time is about 20 minutes.

Note: Not Recommended: Ferry: Charlotte Amalie (downtown waterfront): The downtown ferry leaves for Cruz Bay from the main wharf in Charlotte Amalie several times a day which vary with the season. Fare: $12.00, each piece of luggage is $2.50; Travel time is about 45 minutes.

St. John: Once on St. John, it will take approximately 45 minutes to get from Cruz Bay to VIERS.

Taxi: Not all taxi drivers will make the long trip out to Lameshur Bay, and as a result not all charge the same fare.  We prefer to work with one operator that includes delivering you to VIERS and provides pick up for departure.  That can be about $35.00 round trip per person. Luggage and tip can be extra. We usually work with Hamilton Eugene and he can be reached at 340-776-6259. You should contact Hamilton a few days ahead of your arrival to schedule pickup at the ferry dock and please confirm the rate prior to travel.

Rental Cars: Rental vehicles are available. While there are less expensive vehicles available on St. Thomas, there is a roundtrip barge fee to consider but most of all, if something happens to the vehicle you have to get it back to St. Thomas and a tow truck can be several hundred dollars and there is usually not same day service.

To get to VIERS, you have to drive on an unpaved road which has a rather steep hill (which is paved) to go over and the main unpaved road has a lot of ruts and pot holes.  While a four wheel drive vehicle is not required to get in and out of the VIERS site, you will need a vehicle that sits a higher than a sedan to clear the low spots.   Be sure to inform the rental company prior to renting a vehicle that you are going to VIERS or the Lameshur Bay area because not all companies allow their vehicles to go off the paved road.

There are several car rental companies on St. John.  St. John Car Rental: 340-776-6103 www.stjohncarrental.com ; Courtesy Car Rental: 340-776-6650 www.courtesycarrental.com ; C & C Car Rental: 340-693-8164 www.cccarrental.com ;Delbert Hill Car Rental: 340-776-6637; Conrad Sutton Car Rental 340-776-6479; Parris Car Rental: 340-776-6171; Spencer’s Jeep Rentals: 340-693-8784; Varlack Auto Rental: 340-776-6412.

Getting to VIERS: Take the Centerline Road (Route 10) for 8 miles to Coral Bay.  Turn right on to Route 107 just as you settle onto the flat area of Coral Bay. There is a ball field on the water side of the intersection.  Follow Route 107 to the very end, about 5 miles of hilly paved road. At the end, the road becomes a rough dirt road, not much more than one lane wide.  Follow this for about 1 mile. It takes you up some steep switchbacks over a ridge and down a long steep incline to sea level, and turns right behind a mangrove area.  About a half mile on the flat section, the road divides and to the right is a road sign welcoming you to VIERS.  The camp site is a short distance along this road.  Total distance from Cruz Bay is a little more than 14 miles and should take about 45 minutes!
