Rangers-in-Training Camp
Camp Description:
Has
your child ever thought about being a
Park Guide,
Biologist, or
Archeologist?
Wonder
what it takes?
Many
students learn by “doing” and by gaining personal experiences which
ultimately lead to career interests.
This
camp will promote career development by building close relationships between
VINP staff as they give students real life career experiences and
training. The camp will consist of
a partial day camp/ partial overnight camp which will take place within Virgin
Islands National Park (VINP) and Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station
(VIERS) on
Limited funding for
this new camp was provided by the
National Park
Foundation
which will provide support for 12 teens to participate.
First
preference will be given to local school applicants and
campers
not already attending VIERS Science Camp.
Topics
of instruction will include:
Hiking,
Nature
Field Journaling and Scientific Data Collection Techniques
Cultural
History and Archeological Field Techniques
Camp
Details:
This
camp will take place during the following dates and consist of 1 day-only camp
followed by 2 overnight days, and 1 final half day of camp. See specifics
below.
Two
overnight stays at Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS) will
provide students with the opportunity to be immersed in a natural setting while
learning about the park and its resources. This will provide a greater
understanding of knowledge gained during this camp and enhance resource
stewardship by strengthening the bond between the student and their island and
Virgin Islands National Park (VINP).

6: DAY CAMP ONLY***Meet at Park’s Visitor Center at 8:30, Day camp over
at 4:00 pm

7: DAY/OVERNIGHT***Meet at Park’s Visitor Center at 8:30 and overnight at
VIERS
July
8: DAY/OVERNIGHT at VIERS
July
9: HALF DAY at VIERS, Camp over at 3:30pm

Responsibilities:


Management
responsibilities and staffing of this program will be shared by Virgin Islands
National Park, and Friends of Virgin Islands National Park and VIERS volunteers
and staff.
