The aquanauts, all employees of the Department of Interior were Richard A. Waller (team leader), John G. VanDerwalker, Conrad V. W. Mahnken and H. Edward Clifton. Three backup aquanauts also were selected: Gary E. Davis and R. Lawrence Phillips, who also worked for the Department of the Interior and Ian G. Koblick who worked for the government of the Virgin Islands.
